upgrades fix problems, cause problems

Hi! I'm having computer trouble again. Basically, I hit limits I couldn't get around so upgraded hardware. It mostly worked great! But that's only "mostly." If anybody knows Ubuntu Studio+JACK, please go look here and tell me whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

Some things to try:

1. Try completely disabling that onboard sound device. Nothing wrong with putting system sounds through the M-audio. That's what I do.

2. Latency isn't an issue if your recording software can compensate. For instance, mine knows the buffer size and just makes sure all recordings line up correctly after-the-fact.

The only time latency is an issue is if you want "Software Monitoring", which I don't bother to use (since I don't want to deal with trying to solve latency issues). I can monitor just fine using the headphone jack on my M-audio interface, which gives me a direct feed right back from the inputs.

I've kind of liked the idea of having the onboard soundcard available for secondary output and such. But rly I'm just worried that if I turn it off I won't get it to turn back on. Despite this, I should try it.

Ardour - which from its pictures looks a lot like Reaper - should adjust for the latency; it is aware. And as per our talk at your house, I got the direct hardware monitoring working earlier, and I've done some testing this afternoon and it seems to sync up with the playback of other tracks correctly. I want to test that some more to make sure but I'm feeling a little better about that now.

Still, it tasks me. Well, it bugs me. It makes me wonder if something else is wrong and waiting to explode.

To be certain the sync is exact (to prove it to yourself), you can play the outputs into the inputs of the m-audio with a short loopback cable. Record something percussive such as a click, and play that output into the inputs while recording. Then look at the results in the timeline (zoomed in really far). If they line up, you're golden.

It worked! The cabling was weird and the FastTrack does not like being looped back into itself - not even a little! - but I got it to work (with cheatings! And bad grounding. Noise is irrelevant here) and the drum clicks lined up awesomely in the editor. So even if I can't fix it, I know it won't add that bit of fuckery. Thanks! ^_^

Heh! One must not let up on the brutality that is Lexulous! But, seriously, she's usually got sufficient IQ points to toss a forward to her hubby, unless she's so fragged she doesn't hardly know her name, and she's well past that stage now. I think she might even be down to LED rage from incandescent!
